Do any remnants of the block house line in South Africa survive, paricularly near Harrismith. Am researching 3rd Volunteer Service Company (2nd Black Watch) soldier who arrived with the unit about Harrismith in April 1902. His unit became "M" Company and am trying to find as much as I can about his time there. He was discharged services no longer required August 1902.

Hi Mike,

In his Blockhouse Field Guide, Simon Green lists and described three extant blockhouses in/near Harrismith. He calls these Harrismith Blockhouse No 1 (Basuto Hill), Blockhouse No 2 (also Basuto Hill) and Blockhouse No 3 (Town Reservoir).

The Town Reservoir example, which I visited in 1981, is particularly well preserved.
