I have just purchased a piece of Trench Art which is inscribed J Hawes South Africa 1900.01.02.

A quick google search has led me to your site where a Private J Hawes is listed. Does anyone have any further information about this soldier and when he was in SA?

According to FMP there are 4 men, 3 Privates and 1 Sapper named J. Hawes that saw service in South Africa......
Do you have any other information?

Based on the date the Sapper can be ruled out as he did not embark for South Africa until 19th May 1900.

Can you post a picture of your item please?

Thank you for all of your replies. I have no other information about the item other than I purchased it as a gift for a friend in an antique shop in Leominster, Herefordshire. See picture (PDF.). Many thanks, Emma.
