My interest in this site stems from my Grandfather.(1873 - 1961) I was very young when I knew him, .
I found out in 2001 that he had served in South Africa and received a copy of his (fire damaged) records.
Medal-wise he received the QSA with 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. A not one one of the QSA roll entries reads '[To] England. Duty completed'.
Thank you David,
And thank you for the link and the information. I procured reproduction medals, the originals are 'out there somewhere' still in family hands I believe.
He returned to Cork, Ireland on discharge and to his job there in the General Post Office. Having married in 1908 his future brother-in-law was to be KIA with the RA in Vermelles in 1915.
