I was in touch with another researcher yesterday. His research suggest the two Paynes are two different people, unfortunately.

The Jameson Payne served in the 1st Sussex Vol Arty; RA (No 82595); Bechuanaland Border Police; Resided Durban; Member of the Natal Rifle Assoc; Served in the Natal Mounted Rifles (196 Staff Sergeant Major) in the Boer War and also in the 1906 Rebellion.

Hello David,

Thanks for both updates.

I thought the Jameson aspect was very much a long shot. Following your earlier advice I found the Jameson Payne's RA attestation papers but was unaware of exactly where & how he served in the Boer War. I didn't have much hope of any connection (I couldn't be that lucky!) but I should very much like to see any papers or details about "my" Payne, whenever you are able to check the Archives. I am very patient - I've made more progress in the last couple of days with your assistance and others than I've made in a long while. It's a good feeling to resolve a mystery even if it is tinged with a little disappointment.

Regards,
John
