Hello all Forum Members
I have recently acquired the QSA to Sjt WRB Thorne. It appears from the name roll that he also received the CGHGSM. serving in the Cape Police.
Is there any record of the existance of this medal, and is the owner prepared top part with it?
If any member has record of this fellow I'd be interested to hear from you.
Many thanks for tons of medal and history info.
regards, Evyn Thorne

Hello Evyn,

William Robert Brittanieus Thorne is sadly also missing a KSA (see attached roll page). His individual application form for the CGHGS medal with Bechuanaland clasp is not among the few hundred that I have found in Cape Town. I have however, found a document which has his name typed onto it for the CGHGS medal which I have attached for you.

I will have a look through a few other research files I have to see if I have anything further for you.

Evyn,

There was someone a few years ago who was maintaining a list of extant CGHGSM. He had identified over 1,100 medals. over 20%, but Thorne's was not one of them.

Dear Adrian
Thank you so very much for sending me the medal rolls and the CGHGSM list.
I appreciate your help.
My QSA has bars CC, OFS, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill.
Is this true? The QSA roll received seems to only confirm CC and Driefontein?
Could he have been involved in the other actions?
regards Evyn

Hi Evyn

Your man only recieved the CC clasp to his QSA. The attached roll only has the CC clasp marked off with the "yes". It is very odd that the extra clasps have been added. The CP were never at Johannesburg or Diamond Hill. There are no other remarks on the rolls to indicate he was attached to any other unit. How do the rivetts on the clasps look, are the official or not ?

Thorne re attested a few times into the CP and the last time was in 1905. By this time his Reg number was 113. He would have resigned around 1908 or so. Only five pages are in his file, i will attach them this evening for you.
