I'm a relative of both Tpr Robert J. Hinton and Tpr. John Hinton (Service nos. 12711 and 12710). They both served in the 71st (Sharpshooters) I.Y.
Robert returned, but sadly John did not, having succumbed to dysentery.
My interests are these two individuals (obviously!), the 18th Battalion, the Rhodesian Field Force, Umtali (Goldfields) Hospital, and war graves.
I have much of the usual material on this pair (attestations, Sharrad Gilbert's book, family records, etc.) but would always welcome discussion on any additional information anyone else has.

But do you have the medals?

Unfortunately not, but if someone does, I'd appreciate a photo! (Realistically, due to events later in life, I suspect that they were lost). Interestingly, there is an annotation in the WO100 medal records (shown below) which suggests a medal for John was issued with the incorrect service number, and subsequently recalled and scrapped.

Yes, I've seen that site. Quite informative. I'm always hoping that there exists somewhere an old photo of John Hinton's grave marker, or at least the cemetery. So many have been lost through theft. Or perhaps someone has a old cemetery plan?
