Hello
I am very new to miltary records. I believe Josiah Tom Winkworth, my grand uncle, served in the Boer War. So far all I have discovered is a J. Winkworth, Trooper, Soldier 94 in the Stockenstrom District Mounted Troops. Apparently no medal clasp was awarded. I do have some information indicating "Medal Roll: 285; Page: 117" but I do not know to which this refers.
I would appreciate any assitance which would confirm this is the person of interest. I would also like to learn about the unit he served in. I do have a photo which I am told is Josiah Winkworth in uniform.

Hello, John, welcome aboard!
The little bit I can see looking at page 117 in WO 100/285 for No. 94 Tpr. J. Winkworth, Stockenstrom District Mounted Troops I see QSA with Cape Colony clasp listed. That squiggly line under CC is "shorthand" for "one", "one" for each name. If you look carefully you'll notice that "yes" with brackets has been entered on top of the squiggly line.

I noticed that there were two other Winkworths in the Stockenstrom District Mounted Troops (perhaps related?):
No. 44 Tpr C Winkworth
No. 60 Tpr CB Winkworth (Also served in the Frontier Light Horse No.198)

Cheers,

Mark

PS: you might want to upload his photo and we might be able to learn something from the uniform/badges etc.

Hi Mark
Thanks for the quick response. The details I provided in my original message came from FindMyPast. I don't know what "WO 100/285" refers too or where I would locate this source. Sorry! Can you direct me there?
Don't seem to be able to upload the photo.

Regards
John

Hi John, "WO 100/285" is the roster reference for the QSA roll for the Stockenstrom District Mounted Troops. If you send me a private message with your e-mail address I'll send you a copy of the page from the role.

Hopefully another member might be able to pick up on the uniform.

Cheers,

Mark
