For your dissertation, might I strongly suggest you peruse the following book "Roberts and Kitchener in South Africa" by Rodney Atwood ISBN 978-84884-483-4; published in 2011. This presents a clear rationale for the camps; distressing as the result of some of the maladministration proved to be. You might also read that the predecessor of the Concentration camps were the 'campos de reconcentrado" used by the Spanish in Cuba in 1896. Not to mention other instances before and since, where the "concentration" of non-combatants was used as a strategy.
