I have in my possession a compass, about 1.5 inches in diameter contained in a pocket watch type flip open metal case, silver in colour, but plate I think.
It is inscribed ' Capt Holby Marshall's Horse '
I took some photos but they exceed the data limit.
I now know what Marshall's Horse and that it only existed from 1899 to 1902.
The web doesn't record a Captain Holtby.

There is a Captain A.E. Holtly (note spelling) on their nominal rolls.

Thanks, I have just double checked, this is a HOLTBY….. very clear, I wish l could put up a photo..
I have also spotted my typo in the original post, the name is correct in the subject line but wrong in the text.
