Mike, thank you for posting the two links. Yes, I too had assumed for many years that the Scottish tins were Christmas gifts, but further research shows that the distribution was actually made during July/August 1900.

Neville ........

What got me thinking it was Christmas was the "For Auld Lang Syne" at the bottom......

Needlepoint Christmas card, made by Diederick Rudolf James KOEKEMOER (Prisoner No. 13176), while P.O.W. at Green Point Camp, Cape Town. He was 38 when captured at Barberton on 14 Sep 1900 [W.O. Prisoner Lists give 13 Oct 1900].

"GREEN POINT POWC / CAPE TOWN / D.R.J. KOEKEMOER / PRISONER OF / WAR NO.13176 / SURENDERED AT / BARBERTON / TRANSVAAL SEPTR 14TH 1900 / TO MY DEAR / WIFE AND / CHILDREN / WISHING / YOU ALL A / MERRY 1900 / XMAS"

After General French's entry into Barberton on 13th September "a number of Boers remained on the hills above the town, of whom some were captured and others surrendered" (Goldmann 1902, p.384).
