This, of course, refers to the Boer side of things - the Johannesburg Politie was divided into mounted and foot sections, both of which saw service in the Boer War.

Not to be confused with the Johannesburg District Military Police which was a Colonial outfit, as detailed in this story angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-awar...r-s-boer-war-odyssey

I understand they were a unit of the ZARPs, or have I got this wrong? If I'm right, this was Cmdt Flip Oosthuizen's outfit, which is a coincidence - see www.angloboerwar.com/forum/17-memorials-...ct-for-a-grave-stone
A fairly recent thesis on this unit is

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Rob,

Yes, that is correct. I have amended the title of the thread to make this more clear.

I was reading that in In 1899, the force consisted of 10 officers, 100 NCOs and 1400 men. A mostly pedestrial force, they were mounted for the Boer War.

Amery notes "Whatever the defects of the "Zarp" as a policeman, he undoubtedly made a first-class fighter, combining the skill of the Boer with the courage and self-sacrifice of the disciplined soldier. The police played a prominent part in scores of engagements, and in losing battles, like Driefontein and Bergendal, they showed that they could face heavy loss of life as bravely as the best of the troops opposed to them."
