After the very kind loan by a forum member of a copy of the Natal Volunteer Record from 1900, I have been digitising the book to add it to the site. It is a really valuable resource to have on the site.

While the scanning and conversion to text is quite accurate, it is not 100% accurate so I would like to ask if anyone can proof read the text for me so that I can correct it please?

There are two sections so far:

Introduction

The Welcome

If you note any errors, can you let me know here please? For the large, second chapter, I have inserted page numbers to more easily identify the sections of the text.

With many thanks
David

In the welcome:

Line 3, it says "hut" instead of 'but".

In got as far as the end of P4 in the Welcome.

P2, it says "to-day" but should probably be "today".

P3, "bucketfuls" should be "bucketful's"

P3, " upon the men ; at Pinetown Bridge" on line 3, there is a space between "men" and the ";".

P3, "excercised" should be spelled "exercised".

P4, last paragraph has quite a few "-" inserted that probably don't belong there.

P5 on line 1, there is a "-" that isn't needed.

P5, line 5 "in' replying" has a ' that isn't needed after in.

In the Introduction, line 49 has "Clod" instead of "God", line 65 has "the tin blasted bush" - ?gun blasted bush?, line 67 has "things as tlu-y were" (probably "things as they were"), line 67 has "hilt the dead" - don't know what that is supposed to be, Line 74 has "and our lust" - think should be "and our best", line 93, "loose" to be "lose", line 97 "he" should be "be".
Thanks for doing that David - all such rare books deserve access!
Best regards
IL.

Can I assist a little more? In The Welcome, P5 line 7 "our best 1o do our duty" - "to do our duty', P7 line 17 is a "!!" (quotation marks?". P9, line 5 "Daughter" should be "laughter'", line 16 "exertion's" apostophe not needed, Line 18, "twelve mouths ago" - "twelve months ago", line 24 ""four had beets prisoners" "four had been prisoners, P22, line 13 "Ladysmith bnt joins" - ""but", P24, line 14 "as X did on the morning" - "as I did on the morning",
P28 line 12 "Buffer's Horse" - "Buller's Horse", line 13 "stiff fresh" - "still fresh".
Hope the above makes sense. This afternoon, I will go through the text again and triple check.
As an aside, it was most interesting to read Gen. Buller's address in reply.
Best Regards

Ian, Ryan,

Many thanks for your careful reading of the text and the suggested changes, almost all of which I have made. I have changed to-day to today as it is now spelt. Checking against the original text, I have left a few suggested changes unchanged eg loose and bucketfuls.

It was very helpful having more eyes on the text. I had changed several instances of Cod to God but I missed that Clod :(
