THIS TABLET WAS ERECTED BY THE URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL OF

Thank you for posting.
It is always easy to miss the memorials in a Church, it has made me more vigilant when visiting.
I found this out today on a visit to Barnard Castle Co.Durham when calling in at the Church of St,Mary's.
I have added my findings to a previous thread.

Even more difficult to find is the church's actual Boer War Memorial in St Wilfrid's Church. The brass plate illustrated here was originally installed in the offices of the Standish with Langtree Urban District Council on the High Street. At some stage after Local Government Reorganisation in 1974, when Standish became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan within Greater Manchester, the plaque was moved to its present position in the west end of the church.
However, there already existed a Memorial to the two men - Halton and Ball - who died in the War. This is over the door leading to the southern roof turret entrance in the south side-aisle of the church, just before the entrance to the Standish Chapel. It is a handsome stone memorial, with coloured detailing, as illustrated. I assume this was installed soon after the end of the war.
Also, L/Sgt. Halton is remembered on the family grave in the churchyard outside.

Thanks, David, and Mike, I wasn't aware of that when I went to Standish. I'd also gone through most of the churchyard, looking for the Commonwealth War Grave-registered graves, but didn't spot the Halton grave.

A return visit is due, but I also need to visit nearby Tunley URC, as there's an ABW memorial there.

Berenice - I've got as far as I can researching the names of men commemorated on WW1 Memorials and on family graves in Standish - I can't find the last 4! I've produced a series of booklets - including one detailing the 45 graves I found - official war graves, unofficial war graves (i.e. they're on a Memorial, but not on CWGC), and commemorations on graves. 40 are in St Wilfrid's, and five elsewhere. I can send you a pdf of it if you wish.
