Fenton is now part of Stoke-on-Trent but before the creation of the city in 1925 it was a town in its own right. The plaque is in what was the Town Hall, lately used as the Magistrates Court, and now redundant and standing vacant. www.stokesentinel.co.uk/VIDEO-Battle-sav...Hall-s/story-1961336

THIS TABLET IS ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE SERVICES/ AND PATRIOTISM OF FENTON TOWNSMEN WHO SERVED/ THEIR QUEEN AND COUNTRY IN THE BOER WAR 1899-1902/ AND TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING/ NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND MEN WHO DIED/ OF WOUNDS AND SICKNESS DURING THE CAMPAIGN.

Corporal Henry Hemmingg 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Bloemfontein
Corporal Thomas Lowe 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers Killed at Colenso
Lance Corporal Bernard John Outram 5th Northumberland Fusiliers Died at Middelburg
Lance Corporal Daniel Price 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers Died at Charlestown
Private William Henry Collis 4th North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Deelfontein
Private J. Critchlow 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Springfontein
Private John Giles 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Charlestown
Private William Leigh 4th West Yorkshire Regiment Died at Grootfontein
Private Joseph Charles Nicklin 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Charlestown
Private Albert Salt 3rd North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Vryburg
Private Joseph Smith 4th North Staffordshire Regiment Killed at Richmond
Private Samuel Travis 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment Died at Grootfontein
Drummer T.P. Wood 4th North Staffordshire Regiment Died at Richmond

Corporal Henry Hemmingg - is this the correct spelling of his surname? The inscription appears to give GG as the ending but should it have been 'Hemmings'?

Berenice,

That's a fine memorial. I don't know how you find these items but I am pleased you do.

From Steve Watt's roll, 2604 Cpl H Hemmings died of disease at Glen and was interred in Karee.

The medal roll (WO100/199p35) has his number as 2654 and an unclear surname:

Best wishes
