I spotted this plaque at the waterfront in Victoria, British Columbia.

The inscription reads - "Born on the Isle of Man. At age 13 he began a life at sea; from Naval Reserve in the Boer War, to officer on the Victoria-based cog WILLIAM JOLIFFE, then Master of the LILLOOET. From 1932 - 1945 served as the first Master of the new Hydrographic Survey vessel WILLIAM J. STEWART" He died in 1960, aged 99 (which means that he would have been aged between 39-41 at the time of the Boer War). The Lilooet was also a hydrographic survey ship.

That's a lovely memorial in a great location. I imagine most people will pass it by as they look at the scenery beyond?

There was something like 30-40 plaques in a line along the waterfront and I checked each one for any war memorial relevance. The things I do on holiday!

That sounds like my kind of holiday!
