....The Press Association correspondent at Beaufort West wires: The recent concentration of Boer commandoes between here and Fraserburg has resulted in the capture of a British convoy which was proceeding to Fraserburg, and which consisted of 56 donkey waggons, laden for the most part with provisions and other supplies for the town. The escort was composed of a hundred men of the West Yorkshire Regiment and 60 of the district mounted troops, ana was commanded by Major Crofton, who on the 5th inst., believing that the enemy was gathering for an attack, despatched twenty of the district mounted troops to ask Colonel Crabbe for assistance. They were unluckily surrounded and captured by a superior force of Boers, and so were unable to convey the message. The convoy laagered at Uitspanfontein the same evening. Sangars were hastily thrown up around the camp, which was to some extent protected on all sides except the north by low rocky ridges. The enemy have since admitted that they expected the convoy to move by night in order to get in touch with the nearest column, in which case it was their intention to attack while the convoy was strung out on the road. Since, however, the convoy at midnight showed no signs of moving, the Boers delivered their attack. Feinting at first on open ground to the north, they drew the defenders' fire in that direction. Meanwhile, the real attack was developed from the south, from which point the enemy rushed the camp in force. Major Crofton was killed, and his force lost 22 killed and wounded.

Excellent post, Berenice. Thank you very much.

I like the wider picture which shows the memorial in context.

The raised font cover is directly in front of the memorial, so it's impossible to get a full frontal view of it.

I couldn't find a mention of Skipper's death, so maybe he died at sea or in the UK after being invalided home, and I couldn't identify Martin, Miller, and Moseley.

Hello Berenice
When I get time I will have a look at the above for you. But you were right about Mr Skipper. He died at sea.

Hi Berenice
Private J Moseley also died at sea. Porter by trade, joined the 3rd battalion on the 25 /4/1901. His medal rolls and P/ E records suggest his number was 2558.
