WALTER BUCHANAN
SECOND LIEUTENANT 1 ST ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS
WHO FELL AT MAGERSFONTEIN, SOUTH AFRICA
11 TH DECEMBER 1899, AGED 21 YEARS.



OFFICERS KILLED AND WOUNDED.
.
1st ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS.
....Killed—Lieutenant-Colonel Goff.
....Wounded—Major Robinson (since died), Lieutenant Graham, Second Lieutenant King, Second Lieutenant Scott (seriously). Lieutenant Vaughan (York and Lancaster Regiment), slightly.
Edinburgh Evening News, Thursday 14th December 1899


Extract from a letter home by an unnamed private of the Highland Regiment, on 14th December :—"I am sorry to say that young Lieutenant King was killed on the 11th of December. He died doing his duty bravely. It will be a sore blow to Colonel King."
Glasgow Herald, Wednesday 10th Jauary 1900


'Colonel King' was Walter's father, Charles Macintosh King, who was the Honorary Colonel in the 4th Volunteer Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

The body wasn't found until 1st January 1900, so he wasn't declared 'dead' until then. After initially being buried at Magersfontein, he was reinterred in the West End Cemetery, Kimberley.

Also named on the battalion memorial at Stirling Castle.
