Thank you for sharing these memorials with us. Perhaps you should apply to the relevant government department (there must be one?) for 'danger pay' on this particular mission.

Regards
Brett

I was very lucky as it started to hail while I was in the churchyard; 20 minutes later, while I was on the bus, it was torrential.

The Palmer roll shows three entries: "3378 Cpl. F. Markland, PoW Steenbokfontein, 1/2/00 12L"
"3398 Cpl. F. Markland, Sgt, Wounded, Palmietfontein, 16/7/00 12L"
"3378 Sgt. F.Markland, Killed in Action, Waterkloof, 28/1/02 12L"
My useful Cavalry CD shows "Markland, F, 3378, Sgt., 12L, wounded Palmietfontein, 16/7/00 and Killed Waterkloof 28/1/02". His medal clasps were Paar/Dreif/Jhb/ DHill/ Witte/RofK.
It is clear that the number "3398" is a misprint for "3378".
Clearly a cavalryman who saw a great deal of action during the South African campaign - and very tasteful memorials.
Regards
IL.
