Thanks for posting that photograph. His Distinguished Conduct Medal is shown under the name of "2898 Cpl. G.F.Collins" of the Yorkshires, "mentioned" by Lord Roberts 4/9/01, the medal announced in LG of 27/9/01 and notified in AO of 15/02. The SAFF casualty list shows him as "dying of disease, Deelfontein, 5/4/00".
I cannot find any details of the deed/s undertaken in the Gazettes. However, the action at Slingersfontein/New Zealand Hill was on a knife edge until a bayonet charge by NZMR (in support of a stubborn defence by the Yorks) routed the attacking Boers. Henceforth, the kopjie was known as "New Zealand Hill". That particular action is well covered in Vol.3 of the Times History.
