Lieutenant Sheridan's parents commissioned luxury New Bond Street retailer Smythson to make this photographic memorial to their son.

Mounted with silver 17th Lancers badge and the officer's signature "Brin". Hinges with London hallmarks for 1901, and reverse of triptych blocked in gilt: "FRANK SMYTHSON, 133, NEW BOND ST. W."

I have sometimes wondered whether the central figure in Richard Caton Woodville's "All that was left of them" might have been based on Lieutenant Sheridan.

.Courtesy of Heritage Auctions

"All that was left of them", Caton Woodville's painting of the Battle of Modderfontein, during which Lieutenant Sheridan was killed.
