In Kendal Cemetery, Westmorland.

IN MEMORY OF
FRANK FARMER HORNE
(VOL. COY. BORDER REGT.)
WHO DIED ON ACTIVE SERVICE
AT ELANDSFONTEIN SOUTH AFRICA
DECEMBER 22 1901
AGED 24 YEARS

ERECTED BY THE MEMBERS AND FRIENDS
OF THE KENDAL CRICKET CLUB.

DEATH OF A KENDAL ACTIVE SERVICE VOLUNTEER. - In the list of casualties in South Africa on Friday the name of Private Frank Horne (7479), of the 2nd Active Service Company of the Border Regiment appeared as being dangerously ill from enteric fever at Germiston, and there was every reason to fear that the struggle for life would be a severe one, inasmuch as Private Horne had not long recovered from an illness of a serious character. On Monday his name occurred again amongst those dangerously ill, and on Tuesday the regrettable announcement of his death on December 22nd at Elandsfontein. In all the announcements as to his illness Germiston was given as the hospital at which he was receiving attention, but not withstanding the apparent contradiction and that 7470 was the number given on Tuesday, there is unfortunately too much reason to believe that the announcement of death refers to Private F.F Horne, of Kendal. Private Horne, who is about 24 years of age, was only a young volunteer when the second call was made upon the members of the Border Volunteers, having joined in January, 1900, but he promptly signified his intention of offering his services, and he was accepted. He is the second son of Quartermaster Sergt. Horne, of the Westmorland Volunteers, and with the latter and his wife and family much sympathy will be felt. Private Horne was well known in Kendal. He took a keen interest in cricket and other sports. During the last few years he was in Kendal he was employed in the office of Messrs. Whitwell, Mark and Co., brewers.
