Another great pic. Colin Walker's Mafeking Siege Register shows Capt. the Hon. Douglas Henry Marsham as killed in action at Cannon Kopje on the indicated date. The first Mafeking inhabitant to die. Born 1871, Educated at Charterhouse and later served in the Bechuanaland Border Police in Matabeleland. He was recorded in BP's journal as "a good officer" and Sol Plaatje said he was his best friend. Marsham's death came to the attention of Queen Victoria as his father had been in her personal service for over ten years. He was entitled to the 1893 BSACM, QSA with clsap "Defence of Mafeking" and BP Memorial medal (never heard of that one before) and the group was sold DNW 12/1991.
