Today is the 125th anniversary of Wednesday, day 4 of the battle of Paardeberg, Piet Cronje's laager.
Packenham has it that Lord Roberts lost his nerve and was about to withdraw and Kelly Kenny would act as rearguard.
The situation was saved by De Wet abandoning Kitchener's Kopjie.
Others say that Roberts had no intention of withdrawing.

The fact that De Wet abandoned Kitchener's Kopje definitely turned the tide in the British favor, as it allowed the British to advance without that defensive position complicating things further.

So, it’s a mix of strategic foresight and luck.
