I have shown the medals previously but wish to repeat it as a tribute to a great soldier.

I well remember sitting in the saleroom in St James's on that memorable Thursday back in 1999, one of the nicest lots on the day in question, it is a great shame this gallant officer did not survive to wear all three of his medals, I'm glad they went to a good home and are fully appreciated for what they are.

It is certainly fitting to see him remembered in this way.

1900 - From the diary of Major George Tatham, Natal Carbineers

Nothing happened of any consequence. Heard that Walker was to move to Wagon Hill with his Hotchkiss and that a A.7 was to be sent there also. Shell from Long Tom, Umbulwana landed in Col. Dartnell's tent destroying everything. Fortunately he was out.

1899 - Diary of the siege of Mafeking by Edward Ross

Thursday, 4 January

Something must have gone wrong in the enemy’s camp today as they have up till now, lunch-time, absolutely not sent us in one shell and only a very few rounds of sniping shots. They are having a big gathering or are in receipt of some news, or as the Boers say, "Ons mut a bietje plan mak.” Very kind of them, hope they will keep this up.

Afternoon. We have only had two big shells today, which the enemy very kindly fired at the empty trenches where our guns had been placed yesterday; this was all the "fighting” they did today. Our seven-pounder fired one shot at them just about dusk.
