This sale is next week: www.spink.com/auction.aspx?id=14018

427 lots of cover and stamps.

It features the Harry Birkhead collection:

The Harry Birkhead collection of The Anglo-Boer War Issues and Postal History offers collectors a remarkable assembly of this popular subject. The sale commences with the Boer Invasion postmarks of the Cape, Natal and Vryburg with many rare and unusual. The sale then offers a fabulous array of the Siege issues with Mafeking featuring surcharge rarities, an array of covers sent out via the two routes that were available and the issues produced from glass plates including a used example of the very rare 3d.. printed in reverse, one of only five examples in private hands. The sale then moves on to remarkable sections of Rustenburg with fabulous covers, and Wolmaransstad with a rare section of items from the "Leask" find. Covers and Revenue stamps from Zeerust conclude the sale which we believe will set benchmark prices for this popular area.

Hello David,
Do you actually collect the period covers, stamps and bank notes etc, it is something that I could never get into.

Morning Frank,

No, I don't collect these types of things. They are interesting historical items but they don't hold very much interest for me.

Best wishes
David

Morning

The late Kenneth Griffiths was a major collector of ABW postal history. He had filing cabinets full of them. I asked him if any of the envelopes contained letters, "Yes" - was he interested in the letters? "No".

Mark,

The estimate for this letter is similar to some of those in the Spink sale.

An envelope sent to a King’s Lynn doctor during the Boer War in Africa in 1900 is set to fetch up to £120 at auction.

Many thanks for the timely post.
