STRATHCONA HORSE

S.S. Monterey With Contingent
on Board to Sail Saturday

THE PREPARATIONS AT HALIFAX

Everything is in Readiness, and
Most of the Men Have Arrived

(Special to the Star)
Halifax, March 15th –

Strathcona's Horse will not embark at pier No. 3, deep water. New orders were issued yesterday. The militia authorities have got permission to use the dry-dock for embarkation purposes, and the steamer Monterey will sail from that place.

The steamer will move up to the dry-dock as soon as possible. The public will not be admitted to the enclosure at the dry-dock, but arrangements are being made for the admission of the general public to the north end of the dockyard, which adjoins the the dry-dock property. The Sugar Refinery warves will also be opened to the public.

The militia bands have received orders to be at the Armouries at one o'clock on Friday afternoon. The troops will be inspected at 1.30 o'clock, and the march to the dry-dock will take place immediately after.

The Militia authorities were advised yesterday by telegram that the first of three trains, with members of Strathcona's Horse, would arrive here last night at eleven o'clock, and other trains later. The men and horses detrained this morning.

Hon. Dr. Borden, Minister of Militia, arrived here yesterday afternoon. The troops will be addressed at the Armouries by General Sir William Seymore, Sir Malachy Daly, and Hon. Dr. Borden .

It has not yet been definitely settled when the transport Monterey will sail, the latest report from the Militia Brigade Office is that she will sail at daylight on Saturday.

PART OF THE FORCE ARRIVES
[/b]

The men from Ottawa, Quebec and Toronto, for the Royal Canadian Regiment arrived this evening. No word has been received from the men belonging to Prince Edward Island. The St. John men are delighted with the treatment they have received here. They are well satisfied with the arraignments made by the authorities for their reception. The men will be kept at the Pictou House until the full quota shall have arrived, when uniforms will be served out.

The Monterey was practically deserted by work men today. Outside of the loading of stores, there has been little activity about the boat. The atrisans have been laid off and beyond a lot of little things which will arrive from time to time, while the vessel is in port, nothing is unfinished.

Several of Strathcona's Horse were working at pier No. 3 yesterday. They were supervising the shipment of ambulance, forage and ammunition waggons. A quantity of canned goods and fresh beef was also put on board, and by tonight everything will be in readiness to sail for South Africa.

INSPECTING THE SHIP
[/b]

The inspection of the ship takes place this afternoon, when Colonel Steele is expected in town. The colonel has been has been appointed a member of the Board of Inspection, and after lunching on the Monterey in the afternoon, the officers will make a thorough examination of the boat. Their decision is a forgone conclusion for a finer transport could not be had. After the inspection, the horses will be placed on board and all that will then remain to be done will be for the men to march on board.

The Halifax bearer corps, as an independent company, has ceased to exist, and in its place is an organization to be known in the future as No. 1 Company of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Its members are the same as those in the Bearer Company; in fact, it is the Bearer Company in all but name.

As has been already mentioned the Elder-Dempster Company have provided the Monterey with special stationary, the writing paper and bills of fare being adorned with the pictures of Lord Strathcona and pictures of the steamer in half tone.

Although the trains bringing Strathcona's Horse were late arriving, the men met with an enthusiastic reception all along the line, the speech making took up several hours. The first train with Colonel (note error in article listed as Major) Steele on board, hauled into the city about 2 o'clock this morning. The second came in about 2 hours (years in article) later, and the third at nine o'clock.

The men were all in excellent spirits, although tired after their run down from Montreal. All three trains were shunted into the deep water terminus, about 160 yards away from the Monterey, and the transfer of baggage and kits commenced at once. The work was pushed forward, but at an early hour was discontinued to permit the embarkation of horses to be carried out. The animals were run up on a siding alongside of the steamer and were quickly transferred from the cars.

The horses were handles with less trouble than on any previous boat and record time was made. Some horses were lame as they came from the cars, while others were frisky as if just taken from the stables. A number were unshod and and these were taken to the shop at the Exhibition grounds to be finished up.

By tonight every horse will be in its proper place, and all that remains is for the men to march on board.

A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
[/b]

Monterey moved up to the dry dock this morning and will be docked for reception of the men. Acting-Mayor Mitchell has proclaimed a public holidsy for to-morrow and has made an appeal to all citizens to decorate along the lines of march. The militia will turn out in full force and will form a guard of honour at the dry dock gates.

Tonight the men will be given a monster smoker at the drill shed at the expence of the city, and a splendid program is being prepared for the occasion.

The men are quartered at the armouries and exhibition grounds, where they will spend their only night in the city.
