Good Afternoon Everyone......

I have spent the afternoon today reading, or should I say partly reading a scrap book that I was lucky to have won in an on line auction...... The scrap book is full news paper cuttings from as I can see all over Canada but mainly from the Daily Montreal Star all for the period from late 1899 to early 1901...... I will admit that a lot of the pages are literally falling apart but are still readable (hope I look as good at their age), so I will be spending a winter transcribing as much as I can and of course I will post the odd good tidbit here..... Note though that the majority will have a Canadian slant, sorry Australia.....

News Paper Unknown – February 7th, 1900

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL STEELE AT CALGARY

Lt. Colonel S. B. Steele arrived yesterday morning and spent a busy day selecting recruits for the Strathcona's Horse. Twenty Three have been selected from Calgary – three over the limit.

Forty will be taken from Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan and 180 from British Columbia. Except the men at Edmonton recruiting has been completed in the Territories and will be completed in British Columbia today. The men selected here while not quite as tall as the last contingent are above standard, and as Col. Steele states are of the build to do the work. On Saturday evening a train leaves here with all the western men except B.C. and gathers up other recruits selected along the line. The artisans required will be mainly taken from Ottawa.

FORTUNE FOR A TROOPER

A Member of Strathcona's Horse Left L 100,000 in England
(Special to the Star)

Halifax, Nova Scotia, March 10th

Trooper James Pender of Strathcona's Horse, was advised by cable from London on Friday that he had been left a fortune of L 100,000 by a relative. An exchange of cable grams followed, providing beyond a doubt that the news was well founded. Colonel Steele allowed the Trooper a furlough of one month to go to England to sign the necessary papers. He will sail on the Steamer Vancouver for England and will rejoin Strathcona's Horse in Cape Town......

(Note: In today's Pound Sterling it would be valued at L 15,707,353.21)
