I think that this is one of four cartoons, possibly drawn by Major HJ McLaughlin when he was in South Africa for the second time.

This is "Ich Dien", showing the day of an officer (?).

And this one is "Nil Desperado" - also marked as "I Yield".

The insignia on the hat (mounted) is "IY).

And then "Unique" or "I Made railways", with the description of I.M.R Highlanders and I.M.R. Naval Brigade

And finally, "Veni - Vidi - Vici"

or "Can I Venture", with the letters C.I.V. on the hat.
