With my ongoing in-depth revision and research for my work on the SAC, I have been trying to find out more about Lieutenant Hamilton's previous service. Hamilton is listed as having served with his brother Cyril during the Anglo Zulu War in the Natal Mounted Police. After leaving the NMP, Hamilton then appears to have served with Willoughby’s Horse in the 1880 Basutoland Gun War. I next traced Hamilton as a corporal with the 1890 Pioneer Column and then, in 1896, Hamilton appears on the medal roll to have served as a Trooper with Gifford's Horse. After the start of the Anglo Boer War, Hamilton is listed on the SAC medal roll as a lieutenant in the Rhodesian Horse prior to him joining the SAC. To further confuse matters, on 10 August 1896, Hamilton was promoted to the rank of captain in the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Manchester Regiment. Can anyone shed more light or confirm Hamilton's military service prior to his service in the SAC?

Hi, see the following information that I have regarding a lieutenant Hamilton:

Lieutenant Henry Rice Hamilton, South African Constabulary (late Rhodesian Regiment), was dangerously wounded 29th June 1901 and died on 1st July at Kromellenboog. He was educated at the United Services College, Westward Ho (1874-77). Lieutenant Hamilton served in Methuen's Horse in 1884-85, and subsequently held a captain's commission in the 4th Battalion Manchester Regiment. His name is inscribed on a memorial tablet in his old college at Westward Ho.
