Question. If one looks at WO/295 pg 171 I see that the Belmont clasp is ticked for everyone. How is that possible if they arrived in South Arica in 1902. I was searching the roll for a no clasp QSA that I have and found the chap but why is Belmont Ticked.

Hi Pauldup,
Not uncommon. It was used as "tick box" to indicate that either the entry was correct or that the medal had been prepared. Just happens that the "Belmont" column is the the extreme left.

Thought as much but wanted confirmation. I see there are supplementary rolls where they applied for 1902 clasp. Were these ever issued? My chap is there but his medal has no clasp.

The "South Africa 1902" clasp was issued at a later date at was to be riveted to the medal. Whether it was issued to the Regiment for distribution I do not know. Certainly I am sure that many recipients of the clasp did not do so, if they had left the Regiment or had died for example. The difficulty in removing the suspender bar on no clasp medals may have been a contributing factor. Many recipients, I am sure just slipped the clasp over the ribbon & this has become separated from the medal over time. I would just add one.

Thanks for that. Think it can stay as it is as the 10th contingent's war was a bit of a misnomer as far as i can see. Spent more time at sea than in country.
