One hundred and seventeen years ago, the Siege of Ladysmith was drawing to a close, and now so too are the extracts from the diary entries of people who endured the siege that have been posted by our host, David, under the headings of the relevant dates. In their publications of these diaries, the Ladysmith Historical Society introduced each with a short biography of the diarist, which may be of interest to readers of their diaries over the past few months. I will post a succession of these introductions, starting with:
