Sturgy raises a good point about the possibility of the composition and durability of the chocolate varying between manufacturers. There may also be variations according to how the chocolate has been stored in the intervening 124 years.

I have an example of a Fry's chocolate tin with the contents in remarkable condition. The only slight blemish is a crack in one of the bars. The smell of cocoa is still very strong after all these years which astonished the assembled members when I showed it at a local militaria society meeting a few months ago.

The image exceeds the size limit to post as an attachment and my attempts to resize it have been fruitless. If anybody can assist I'd be most grateful.

Wow David; that is amazing; it's an absolute treasure.

Well done on keeping it and ensuring it's preservation.

I'm too scared to smell the "powdery" one....I'll end up with brown residue around my nose and end up in an alternate coco universe.

Good Morning Gentlemen.......

If you go to page 7 of this thread you will see all three makers....... The Cadbury one still has the silver paper, wood shaving packing and picture of Queen Victoria.......

I have 6240 George Horton of the 2nd Scottish Rifles fry's chocolate tin. He did not exhibit the same self control as some of the recipients above with regard to confectionary consumption. However, he did later keep his medals in his tin (still lined with the chocolate stained paper), which somehow ended up hidden in his neighbour's house, and then found by my great aunt many years later. I will put a post about the whole little trove on the medals thread, but for now, here is George's tin.

Davidh,
That example of a Fry's chocolate contents is probably the best I've seen. Amazing.
I do not have one in my own collection. I strive to find an immaculate one!!
Cheers Steve
