Meurig,

You have done a most excellent job ;)

In terms of service papers Ancestry & FmP hold different sets; FmP - Victorian to 1913 and Ancestry from 1914-1922 - so you need to search both.

And neither claims that 100% of records have survived.

Searches on both are free, so no need to spend money until you need to - but you've got a subscription already....

Paul is dead right about the casualty info on FmP ;)

Meurig

I have subscriptions to both sites. Theoretically FMP is the one for Victorian papers and Ancestry for WW1 papers. However, I've found many sets of Boer War papers of 'my' men in both the WW1 Service and WW1 Pension papers series even including a few fatal casualties of the ABW. One can understand combined papers of men who served in WW1 being there but I've also found the ABW era papers of men who didn't. They shouldn't be there but they are.

Of course not all sets of papers have survived but your hit rate (or lack thereof) is very unusual so it's definitely worth checking Ancestry too.

David

I've checked out your three men and found the papers of two of them. I couldn't find anything on Green.

Frederick Short has his ABW era papers in FMP plus his WW1 papers in Ancestry's WW1 Pension papers series. He re-enlisted into the Leicester 15/8/1914 but was discharged medically unfit 26/12/1914 due to tubercle of the lung.

Henry Sadler's ABW era papers are in FMP. There's no trace of any WW1 papers in Ancestry.

I hope this helps.

Regards

David

Hello Mike,
If you are only looking at members of the British Army, fmp/ancestry is the way to go go, almost all of WO96, WO97, WO128 is available on fmp and again, almost all of WO363 and WO364 are available via ancestry.
You should bare in mind that if any given man cannot be found on line, it does not mean his papers do not exist, but, it does mean his papers are less likely to exist today, moreover, you should also note that a manual search cannot be made in WO363, this is a problem area as there are a number of men who have their papers mixed up with other men of the same name.
However, with the SAMIF, you should consult WO126 and WO127 at Kew, because the transcribed records available online are really far too little, all too late in the day, they do not give you the detailed information that you really would need and are based on published material that contains many errors and omissions.
Regards Frank
