Good Morning Everyone.....

I have purchased a subscription to Find My Past and I am very disappointed with it as I have tried to find documents and info on 25 of my men and have been only able to find ONE....... That is other than a printout saying what medal roll my man is on and sometimes the bars that are or should be on the medal..... Maybe I am doing something wrong.....

Then there is Ancestry dot Com...... Which is the better one for finding documents and history..... Which one do you like to use.....

Hello Mike,

I have subcriptions to FMP and Ancestry, one for service records and the other for medal rolls.
I find Ancestry easier to navigate and sometimes you can be lucky and find pension records when service records are unavailable on FMP
FMP have more information listed for casualties I find, they have more detail.
I have probably been lucky in searching for records before purchasing.
So to answer your question, they both have their advantages, but they both have limitations.

Mike,
Who are you looking for and what exactly is it that you want?

Hello Mike

In terms of service papers Ancestry & FmP hold different sets; FmP - Victorian to 1913 and Ancestry from 1914-1922 - so you need to search both.

And neither claims that 100% of records have survived.

Searches on both are free, so no need to spend money until you need to - but you've got a subscription already....

Paul is dead right about the casualty info on FmP ;)

What I am looking for is service mans papers from the Boer War period so I guess that FMP is the best one.....

Hello Mike,
Yes, I realise that, but again, it all rather depends on just who it is you are looking for, so when you say Boer War period, who exactly is it?
