Dear all,

I'm beginning to compile a list of memoirs that include accounts of service in the Imperial Yeomanry in the Boer War. This refers to general autobiographies rather than Boer War specific memoirs e.g. not Ross's 'A Yeoman's Letters' (1901) or Peel's 'Trooper 8008 Imperial Yeomanry' (1901).

As an example, I have recently rediscovered 'Half a Life' by Major C. S. Jarvis, C.M.G., O.B.E., published in 1943. Jarvis served as 8201 Trooper Jarvis in 31st (Montgomeryshire) Company, 9th Battalion. 80 pages are a lively and amusing account of his yeomanry service.

Another example is 'Theatre of Life' (1935) by Esme Howard, better known as Lord Howard of Penrith G.C.B., G.C.M.G., who was one of Britain's most influential 20th century diplomats. He served as a Trooper in the 47th Company (Duke of Cambridge's Own), was captured at Lindley and subsequently escaped. He recounts his exploits in some detail.

Can others add to the list?

Best wishes,

Justin

Hello Justin,
Have you actually read "Trooper 8008 Imperial Yeomanry", I think I do have a copy somewhere, but, have never looked at it.

Justin,

That sounds a worthy project. I sometimes come across someone's Boer War service quite unexpectedly. I guess the problem is knowing these very useful chapters exist in a biography or other work. The published bibliographies tend to identify those books with a focus on the war rather than books that cover it. Hence you post!

Best wishes
David
