One that had proved illusive – until I recently purchased the photograph album of Captain George Graham Middleton, Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons). The first four leaves are devoted to the boarding of "A" Squadron Royal Scots Greys at Queenstown, on 17 November 1899. This is the most complete set of images of a unit's embarkation that I have come across.

Britannic 62
From an album kept by the wife of Captain R.T. Ellison, 2nd Life Guards, Atjutant of the Household Cavalry The photo of the ship is quite similar to the one posted in this thread by Neville of the Britannic leaving Southampton. (Post # 84639)

Captain R.T. Ellison

Below photograph was probably taken before the war. It is possible that Baden Powell is seated third from the left as his signature appears in the album.

Zibenghla - medals to 3rd Engineer Thomas Howard Jarvis. I often wondered what his role in the boiler and hot coal issues was.

Another snippet from The Times
30-10 p11A
Letter from 'Custos'
Answers from First Lord of the Admiralty in the House “can hardly be regarded as sufficient or satisfactory.”
leaking boilers, “sanitary arrangements were atrocious”, “coal bunkers on the point of taking fire”, “deck seams would allow the filth from the horse deck to drop upon the unhappy artillerymen below, inspections are evidently a farce.”

In the book P & O at 175, a world of ships and shipping since 1837 by Bruce Peter and Philip Dawson is this picture entitled:

The Persia of 1900 was built on the Clyde by Caird & Company of Greenock. In December 1915, a German U-boat torpedoed her off Crete, killing 343 of the 519 on board (Mick Lindsay collection).
