During the last phases of the war it was not uncommon for well-heeled British ladies to visit South Africa. In some cases these visits were made to see the place were a beloved son died or was buried, sometimes to visit relatives still active in the field and sometimes out of pure curiosity. Whether these visits were universally appreciated remains a matter of debate although I know that Baden Powell did not like having Lady Sarah Wilson (Winston Churchill’s aunt) around and many of Lord Roberts’ staff officers would gladly have strangled that buxom interfering busybody of a Lady Roberts.

One of these illustrious visitors was Countess Kintore who travelled (with offspring and maid) to South Africa during the final months of the war and documented her travels in an album with many photographs and other ephemera. To stay with the subject of this thread, I show below some of the ephemera relating to her sea voyages to and from South Africa.

To South Africa on the Galician

Back to the UK on the Dunottar Castle

Interestingly, on her return trip the Lady was accompanied by Lewanika, King of Barotseland. The King must have been a personal friend of her husband ‘s as the album contains a signed photograph and a few letters signed by him. In honour of the King, the menu for May 15, 1902 was also presented in the King’s language, probably Silozi.
