During my random wanderings on the internet, I stumbled upon reference to the book in the subject line - a history of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley in Southampton. It looks like the book covers the hospital's entire history from the Crimean War through to the 1960s when it was razed.

My question is: Does anyone have this book, and how much of it is devoted to the care and treatment of Boer War casualties? My interest lies in the fact that my Great Grandfather spent about two months there in late 1900 convalescing from a bad case of Malaria before being discharged from the IY as medically unfit.

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

I had not heard of this book before but have spent the last 30 minutes reading some review of it. These reviews are quite varied and it is difficult to gauge how much information is contained in the book that would be of use to genealogists and people interested in military history.

I see it is on sale for £10 at Amazon .

Best wishes

Thanks David,

I found a used copy on Abebooks for the princely sum of $1. I figured that was a fairly low risk outlay, so ordered it last week. Of course it's got to make its way across the Atlantic since I couldn't find the book Stateside (at any price), so I'm out considerably more on the shipping. Still, the total price is less than a lunch (at the company cafeteria, not the Savoy), so again, not bad.

I'll report back after I get it.

Lets hope that journey does not take too long. I am very interested to hear how you find the book. Some reviewers love it and others are of a diametric opinion.

Best wishes
