Hi Everyone, I am hoping someone can help with some notes I took 30+ years ago at the National Archives (then PRO). W.O. 83/11 contains court martial records. I have notes of a Cpl D McAlhane, R.I. Rifles (probably Royal Irish Rifles?) who was arrested for manslaughter. He was accused of getting drunk and, when denied more alcohol, shot and killed two persons. The CM occurred 16 October 1900 at Ladybrand, and the DJAG chose not to get involved on 28 December 1900.

I do not see a McAlhane in the database and I just want to get the details straight. Thanks.

All my usual searches prove unsuccessful for McAlhane. Think you may have noted his name incorrectly and it should be McAlhare.

Western Daily Press 25 August 1900:

but his service records don't show service in SA

but they are obviously incomplete

In the 1890's he had a poor disciplinary record including military and civil imprisonment but the demon drink not mentioned and neither the later incident you refer to.
