Please add Greening to the database. His papers can be found at the National Army Museum and they contain a very useful memoir. I do not know what the W. stands for. Thanks

Attestation papers & service record can be found on Find My Past:

The previous sheet says he was discharged 14 July 1902 i.e. South Africa. Hope he did not abandon Emily Clara, Emily Elizabeth & Margaret Florence!

Thanks. His memoir ends with him landing in Southampton on 6 January 1903, happy to see his "dear parents and friends again," and then returning to work at the War Office, this time at the Intelligence Department. His wife and children had been granted permits to join him in SA well before he sailed home and arrived in March 1902. "The meeting was one too precious for mere words and we clasped one another in silence, after nearly, three long years of separation and anxiety we met at last! I did not know my little girl, she had grown so and to hear her speak, was strange and pleasant to my ears." !!!
