The casualty rolls don't help much, for 22-04-1901 in the Cape Colony, no other SALH casualties: Pte S Chalker IY killed Slangfontein (unidentified) and Trpr Plewman Rimington's Guides wounds died or killed 23-04 Colesberg (or surrounding area).

Just a quick question.
Is it possible the L G may have reported Cape Colony by mistake?

As previously posted, the only 2 Winterskraal I could find were both farms where Boer prisoners were taken from. Transvaal and Orange Free State. At present, I have not been very successful in finding one in Cape Colony. If it exists, surely a veteran South African forummer should be able to help take this off the drawing board?

Rory
This is the link to the 2nd Winterskraal Farm as previously mentioned.
I'm still on the trail for the Cape Colony connection.
No luck with a wounded man on that date in SAFF ref SALH.
Your man is mentioned 3 times in dispatches. Buller, Robert's and Kitchener.
It is Kitcheners dispatches that mentions Winterskraal Cape Colony.
Oh I do like a challenge :)

Ps. I did find a Trooper Z E Schmock who was with the S A L H and he was killed on the 6th April 1901 at Smithfield.

This is the only action I could find at present which matches the correct date.

A research "tip" which I use and which could be of benefit to others (although it hasn't worked in this instance...) is to look up the name of the unit in Volume VII (Index) of Amery's Times History. This will give you all the references, across all the volumes wherein they appear. That way you can track their movements.

As I said, it didn't work in this case as the SALH are only mentioned in the Cape Colony up until March 1901 and then again from May/June 1901 by which time they were in the Free State - so we have the missing month of April!

Could it be that Dow was seconded to another unit? Doubtful, but where were the SALH in April 1901??
