There's been a lot on the Forum of late concerning deaths from disease, of which typhoid fever (enteric fever) was the leading cause.
I recommend a resource:

Although it is impossible to read cover-to-cover, it is excellent if you search for terms like 'typhoid' 'enteric fever' 'Intombi' etc.

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Another one worth having a look at, especially for those amongst us with a medical background:

[Cd. 1498]
Report of the commission on the nature, pathology, causation and prevention of dysentery and its relationship to enteric fever. Appointed by the Secretary of State for war, August, 1900.
H.M.S.O., London 1903.

If you like facts, figures, and graphs, try The Mortality Experence of the Imperial Forces during the South African War by Frederick Schooling and Edward Rusher, 1903. I do not know if this is available on line. It is a paper read before the Institute of Actuaries and makes grim reading.

Another useful reference is The Medical History of the War in South Africa. An Epimemiological Essay by Lieut. Colonel R. J. S. Simpson, 1911, reprinted from the Journal of the RAMC.
