That makes good sense. Many thanks, Neville.

Apologies for asking for help again but this paragraph is perplexing me.

Armament. Second 7 pr arrived from Kimberley. These are very old, practically useless guns and came deficient of sights and trunnions? ????. Their range is scarcely greater than that of a rifle ???? ???? wheels turn around?

I think it reads:

These are very old, practically useless guns and came deficient of sights and various fittings. Their range is scarcely greater than that of a rifle. Wheels unsound.

There is text between the decrypted lines. To me it reads something like: .. from Bulawayo .. … armoured .. left there last night. Should change .. will bring an additional Maxim… on our strength. Neville?

Many thanks, Neville, This makes more sense.

EFV, some of the text is showing through from the page below which is creating much of the difficulty in reading the pages.

It is that time again when I seek different perspectives on this text from BP's diary.

Underneath the text is written:

Two photographers who had been staying in the Boer camp report 7 guns of modern type there (one of the men was in the German army). Consider there were 4,000 men in camp, Cronje said to be at Polfontein also with guns. Boers say no movement intended till war is declared.

The text on top is more difficult to read:

Captain Goodyear taken on at 15/- to organise instruction of boys for the ??? of this ???? parts of the type???

Corps of cadet orderlies assembled. This will relieve ??? and help to carry on their proper duties.

With thanks
David
