Greetings everyone,
May I ask a couple of questions please?

Does anyone know if any service files for members of the Protectorate Regiment are archived in South Africa, and if so, can you suggest a researcher that I could hire?

Do you know of anyone who has a copy of the Baden-Powell war diaries?

Thank you VERY much for any assistance you can provide.

Surviving rank and file papers for the Protectorate Regiment are in WO126/105 at Kew, there are no papers for officers commissioned directly into the SAMIF.

Roy,

Who are you seeking in the Protectorate Regiment?

Roy,

The National Army Museum may be a good place to start. They hold:

Papers of Lieutenant-General Robert, Lord Baden-Powell relating to his military career 1878-1907, including the siege of Mafeking Oct. 1899-May 1900 during the South African War (1899-1902), and the South African Constabulary.

There is information on BP held in several places. None specifically mention his diary.

Do any of the Mafeking accounts quote from his diary?

Hi David & Frank,
Thanks very much for your response.

I'm hopeful of writing a biography on 102 Trp. Arthur Frederick Wood who was taken prisoner at Game Tree Hill.
I have a copy of the Nominal Roll.
I had a researcher check at Kew; he is sending me a copy of the medal roll but there were no service files.

Very sorry, when I said BP's war diaries I actually meant his Staff Diary which is referenced in the link you provided.
There is mention of his Staff Diary and the events surrounding Wood's capture in this thread....
angloboerwar.com/forum/17-memorials-and-...-mafeking-26-12-1899

This leads me to believe that someone has either a copy or a transcript of the diary.

I also tried to get a copy of Colin Wilson's Mafeking Siege Register but it's out of print.

I've just sent a PM to LinneyI, hoping he can help!
