The Epworth League took its name from the birthplace of John Wesley in Lincolnshire, and was founded to "promote intelligent and vital piety among the young people of the Methodist Church". The Methodist Church building on Dufferin Grove, Toronto was built in 1891, the 100th anniversary of the death of John Wesley, and was named the Centennial Church.
