Brighton Southern Cross, 13th January 1900

A number of the residents of South Brighton subscribed a few pounds towards purchasing a memento for Private DAFF, who sails today with the Victorian contingent to South Africa, and awaited a favourable opportunity to present it. Late on Wednesday night it was found DAFF had paid a farewell visit to his parents and on his return to Melbourne a few of the donors met on the South Brighton station at 10.30 p.m., and the presentation was made by P. White just before the train left for Melbourne. The memento chosen was a pair of field glasses, and the recipient expressed his thanks for his friends’ thoughtfulness. Private DAFF is to be given a gold locket this morning at the barracks, suitably inscribed, from the members of the Wesleyan Christian Endeavour Society and the S. Brighton Sunday school.
