Note: the Adelaide Register (20/08/1901) reports that the presentation was made at Summertown, Adelaide. This appears to be a typo. Sergeant Hey's next-of-kin lived in Lochiel, 19 km south of Snowtown, the town cited in the Adelaide Chronicle report.

SUMMERTOWN [sic?], August 19.

On Friday last a welcome social was tendered to Sergt. Thomas HAY, of the fourth contingent. The institute hall was crowded. Mr J. Allan, president of the local defence rifle club, with a guard of honour received the guest. The men sang “Soldiers of the King”, the solo being taken by Mr W.C. Coltman. The president handed the returned soldier a gold medal, suitably inscribed, from the local defence club. The recipient, in the course of his reply, gave an interesting account of the war, and exhibited several curios. Eulogistic speeches were given by the president, the Rev. Mr McIntosh, and Mr C.H. Coltman. During the evening the following programme of musical items was presented: — Duet (piano), Misses Coltman and Green; solo (violin), Miss A. Hall; song, “Dashing white sergeant”, Miss Grigg; “Dear mother England”, Miss Green; “Scarlet and blue”, Mr R.C. Davis; “The powder monkey'' and “Off to Philadelphia”, Miss Carter; “The swallows”, Miss McCormack; “The boys of the fourth brigade”, Mr L. McCormack; “Sons of the sea”, Mr C.H. Coltman; selections on the graphophone, Dr J.C. Kennedy. Refreshments were handed around, and the proceedings passed off successfully. Trooper H.F. STICHT, of the same contingent, was present, and a hearty welcome was extended to him.

SNOWTOWN, August 19.

A welcome social was tendered by the Snowtown Defence Rifle Club on Friday evening to Sergeant Tom HEY, late of the I.B.C. There was a large and representative attendance. The Institute Hall was decorated for the occasion, and a motto of welcome was hung above the centre of the stage. Upon his entrance to the hall Sergeant HEY was escorted to the platform by the membra of the D.R.C., marshalled by Captain J. Kelly, while "Soldiers of the king" was being sung by Mr W.C. Coltman, with chorus by the members of the club. Trooper HECHT (I.B.C.), of Hoyleton, was present as an invited guest. The president of the S.D.R.C (Mr J. Allan), in welcoming Sergeant HEY back to the district, congratulated him upon his safe return, and on his promotion during his service in South Africa, he having joined as a trooper and having been promoted first as corporal and afterwards as sergeant. Other speakers were the Rev. J. McIntosh and Mr C.H. Coltman. Sergeant HEY responded. The two returned soldiers exhibited some interesting curios, which they had brought back with them from the war. During the evening Sergeant HEY was presented with a gold medal, suitably inscribed, by the members of the S.D.R.C.  Mr J. Allan (the president) made the presentation. The following ladies and gentlemen contributed musical numbers: — Overture, Misses Coltman and A. Hall; violin duet, Miss A. Hall and Mr W. Orr; songs, Misses Grigg, McCormack, and Green, and Messrs C.H. and W.C. Coltman, P. Carter, R.C. Davis, and L. McCormack. The catering was done by Mr A.J. Penno, who carried out his duties satisfactorily.
