About a hundred of the South Melbourne friends of Sergeant A.D. WARDEN assembled on Wednesday evening, at the South Melbourne College Hall, to wish him good-bye prior to his departure for South Africa with the Second Victorian Contingent. Councillor Palmer occupied the chair, and presented the guest of the evening with a gold chain and medal, suitably inscribed, as a token of the affectionate regard of his many friends. A number of musical items were effectively rendered, and the evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. A large party of friends afterwards drove Sergeant WARDEN in a drag back to camp, appropriate songs being indulged in on the journey.
