FIFE AND FORFAR YEOMANRY.

Six out of eight applicants passed the doctor and riding test yesterday. There was only one attestation, viz., James B. HARLEY, Peasehills, Gauldry. HARLEY is a trooper in “A” Squadron of Fife Light Horse. A draft of eleven, in charge of Trooper ALISON, left for Aldershot with the ten train last night. The usual presentations were made by Colonel Sir John Gilmour. About fifty of the men who joined at Cupar sail for South Africa today.

PRESENTATION TO TROOPER J.B. HARLEY.

Last night a number of Mr HARLEY’s friends met him in the Royal Hotel and presented him with a handsome gold albert and pendant, bearing a suitable inscription, a purse of sovereigns, and some serviceable articles. Mr Thomson, Kilburns, occupied the chair, and there were present: – Mr S.W. Johnston, Fincraigs; Mr E. Harley, jun., Peasehills; Mr Ireland, Newport; Mr Geo. Ballingal, Newton; Mr Thomson, Newport; Mr A. Harley, Kingston, Canada; Mr T. Barrie, Gauldry; Mr Robertson, Gauldry; Mr J.P. Mitchell, Cupar; Mr Malcolm, Newport; Mr T. Rintoul, Balhelvie; &c.  Mr Robertson, Gauldry, made the presentation, and referred to the esteem in which Mr HARLEY was held by his many friends in the North of Fife. He wished him a good time while he was in South Africa, and trusted that it would not be long before he was home amongst them again. (Applause). Mr HARLEY thanked his friends for their unexpected gift, and said he would endeavour to do his duty as a soldier of the King to the best of his ability. A number of toasts were submitted, including that of Mr and Mrs Harley, the father and mother of the trooper, and were cordially pledged.

PRESENTATION TO A FIFE TROOPER.

J.B. HARLEY, Peasehills, Gauldry, who volunteered for active service, and who left Cupar on Tuesday for Aldershot, was entertained in the Royal Hotel, Cupar. Amongst those present were: – Messrs Johnston, Fin-Craigs; Thomson, Kilburn; Ireland, Newport; Ballingall, Newton; Thomson, Newport; Mitchell, Cupar; T. Harley, Peasehills; A. Harley, Kingston, Canada; Berry, Gauldry; Robertson, Gauldry; and Malcolm, Newport. Mr Thomson, Kilburn, introduced Mr Robertson, Gauldry, who, in a few well-chosen words, presented Trooper HARLEY with a gold albert and pendant bearing a suitable inscription, a number of minor articles, and a purse of sovereigns. Trooper HARLEY’s health was proposed and cordially responded to, Mr HARLEY making a suitable reply. A number of toasts, including “The health of Mr and Mrs Harley, Peasehills”, were given, and songs were rendered by various members of the company.
