MIRFIELD.

PRESENTATION TO A SOLDIER.

At a gala which was held in a field adjoining the Horse Shoe Inn on Saturday, Corporal John SWABY, of the 1st Durham Light Infantry, was presented with a gold medal and suit of clothes in recognition of his services in South Africa. The medal bore the inscription: “Presented to Corporal John Swaby by a few friends on his return from South Africa, July 18th, 1901”. On the reverse of the medal, in enamel, are the war ribbon colours. Mr George Hepworth occupied the chair, and the presentation was made by Mr T. Platt, who referred to the fact that the recipient had served thirteen years, and had been wounded twice. Corporal SWABY suitably acknowledged the gift, and Sergeant-Instructor BOND also spoke.
